Western District President Update
"Racing for Renewals"
by Western District President Barbe Wolkoff
Happy February to my American Legion Family. This is AMERICANISM month, my favorite. Americanism is one of the great programs where you can be as active as you want or just be supportive. We can promote an event or just fly our flags every day.
Respect is both earned and learned. The fundamental value of the American Legion Auxiliary is showing respect for our country and our nations flag. The ALA creates opportunities to learn and instructional resources for important things every good citizen should know, like learning about the Constitution, flying the flag on patriotic holidays, folding pocket flags to send to our troops and giving flags to our schools and local businesses.
The ALA is a member of the Citizens Flag Alliance and advocates for a constitutional amendment to protect our flag by supporting federal legislation and encouraging other people to do so. Last year Americanism program participants donated over 2,000 flags to schools across America and mailed over 66,000 pocket flags to soldiers overseas.
The Flag Education Program is to build patriotism in our youth and to develop a thorough understanding of proper flag display and courtesy. Flag Etiquette is easily taught; shown and practiced at schools. We have been encouraged and very welcomed at our local schools. The students enjoy these programs because they are hands-on and require participation. Teaching "flag folding" is both important and fun. Having a Color Guard (from a local military branch) present and involved can really make an impressive impact and is educational.
We believe promoting a spirit of patriotism by teaching about it, develops lifelong respect for what we hold dear, our country and our flag.
By the time the March issue of the Legionnaire arrives, I will have completed my year as your Department of Alaska, Western District President. I have had the time of my life. All the Posts/Units have received me so graciously for my visitations and treated me like royalty. So much good food and great camaraderie. My thanks and admiration to all.
